I know many of you are going for the smoke look for the tail lights, similar to the OEM smoke. I was browsing through dupicolor's websight and noticed MetalCast. It gives chrome pieces some color, in our case some smokeness. I'm going to try soon, but i just wanted to post this for anyone that has plans on painting their tail lights soon.

Here's the Website:
METALCAST
also found on kragen's website if you want to order:

Note: you will also need to get adhesion promoter as well since chrome pieces can not be sanded down.

^ No, Duplicolor makes a smoke color for their Metalcast series. It's pretty much a tint type of paint for their smoke color. I played with the smoke color Metacast spray on some beat up Toyota badges, almost gave it that black pearl look, but yeah could of been darker.

where's the how to on cracking those puppies open before the paint? The painting part is easy, picking the colors and stuff. The hard part is getting in those babies. I did my headlights long ago. Easy. Tails, difficult, until I see somebody say otherwise.

I would give it a 4/10 in terms of difficulty because the dremel is hard to control at first, but after i got used to it.. it was cake. My first tailight took about 2 hours (very cautiously) and the 2nd one took about 30 min to rip open (with experience).

no, it's okay. I just thought that the metal case would show more chrome then it shows in the picture. For some reason i expected similar to Sport Design where the chrome is nice and shiney. But it looks good either way. How many coats did you put on? several thin coats, or just a couple thick coats.

i dont know about the new "smoke" version, but when i did mine about 2 years ago, i expected more of a "black chrome" look to the headlights. In the beginning, it did have a lot of reflectiveness due to the "flakes", but over time, it wore out and you get the color you see now. If you are looking for a transparent paint, this is not the item that you are looking for.

And to answer your question, I applied several thin coats and then a final thick coat.
