Tips on Cleaning Coilovers?

I just picked up a set of used coilovers but they're pretty dirty and pretty much taken straight off the car.

Any specific procedures I need to follow to clean these coilovers? The seller said that he put grease on it before it was installed and that I should probably leave it as is since the grease is there..but i'm thinking I should probably do a full clean before I install it.

Any ideas?

When I cleaned up a set of coilovers for sale, I just used simple green, a plastic brush and water. They didn't look brand new but got them to 95%.

Depending on the manufacturere you can see if they recommend oiling the threads for rust protection. Some coilovers don't have an issue with this. I had some teins that I only used a little silicon lube when I needed to adjust.
