I run a breather on the fresh air side of the PCV system (passenger side valve cover). It doesn't get oily, and if your dirty side of the PCV system (the side with the PCV valve) is working properly, you shouldn't get any oil in the breather filter unless you are running boost on an engine with a ton of blow-by.
Most of the breathers you buy from that parts shops are un-oiled, so I spray a little K&N filter oil on it just to make sure it catches most of the crap. I replace it once a year. They are cheap enough that you don't have to waste time cleaning them.
