Okay, I feel that ecsaine is both more comfortable and looks better than the full leather, but I've always wondered, what is it exactly? I know it's synthetic suede. It looks and feels alot like suede, but what is it made of? I gather it's a combination of different fibers. The only web sites I could find on google were in Japanese.

Also, Lexus calls the ecsaine race-inspired. What race cars use this type of material, and are they using ecsaine, real suede, or another synthetic?

You just said it. It's fake suede.

They don't really go into much detail, but you already summed it up quite well.

Lexus' statement of escaine being race-inspired is just another marketing gimmick. Just like the e-shift being compared to the F1 racing shifters.

Right, but what types of fiber? Is it entirely made of synthetic fibers? Is the fiber called ecsaine or is the combination of different types of fiber in a specific bundling pattern?

It'd be nice to know the make up of the fibers, etc. Or is Ecsaine one of those proprietary things?

Lexus' idea is to position Ecsaine as the Japanese-made homologue of the Alcantara material that comes on European sporty vehicles (e46 BMW M3, Volvo C70, there's more but I can't remember beyond those.)

Besides playing around with real leathers for just about forever, Europeans have been playing around with synthetic leather, which has proven to be superior to real leather in certain applications. Another example in the same vein is Lorica, which has gained enough acceptance through speciality cycling shoe makers that Nike is beginning to use it on their own high-end cycling shoes.

It's been said that the BMW "leatherette" isn't too bad either.
