bringing this post back to life. I changed my oil myself this weekend for the first time (I've always taken my vehicles places for oil changes in the past.) Great write-up. I was able to do it with very few problems. +rep

I actually ended up taking the oil filter off from underneath the car since my car never came with a front undercarriage gaurd I just reached up there, grabbed and twisted it off with the oil pan ready underneath for the dripping oil. Filled the new filter about 3/4 full like you said and screwed it back on as tight as I could with just my hands.

One question I had is the amount of oil it should take. The owners manual said 5.7 quarts. I bought 6 quarts of mobile1 synthetic extended performance and it sucked it ALL down. I went out and bought another quart just to be sure it was full all the way and it took another one down for a total of 7 quarts. No leaks I swear. Is it possible to put too much in? How do I know when to stop? It's not like it's up to the top of the fill hole or anything like that.
7 Quarts sounds like way too much.
I do my own oil changes using Mobil1 Synth and I use only 5 1/3qts.

I use a zip lock bag but loosen the filter with a Bounty Paper towel and grip .

You gotta have really thin forarms (which I don't have) to do it easily...so it takes me like 30 minutes since it's difficult to maneuver.

When it's loose, just get a medium sized ziplock bag and put it under the filter and loosen it all the way.. it'll drop into the bag. (MAKE SURE YOU'RE HOLDING PART OF THE BAG). Also make sure the engine is cold when you do it... heat and plastic don't mix.

Just wanted to add this was a perfect tutorial for doing this. Doing 60k service, and using this as a guide for the filter she didn't draw blood like the last time I did it.

Kudos

Great tutorial bump, loved the idea of the bag for the filter do that every time. Filter is actually a piece of cake on this car compared to some.

Good write up.

There is a easier way of doing this though.

Here is a quick version of mine.

1. Become friends with one of the mechanics at your local toyota dealership.

2. Take your IS to them, and have them change your oil. While you catch up on the latest in some magazine.

3. They use their discount, so the oil change and new filter are only about $25 bucks.

4. Drive off, go get a sandwich, and make sure to invite your friend to the kegger this weekend for helping you change your oil.

Just changed the oil for the first time in my new(used) car. Thanks again for the tutorial. Even though I've changed my own oil since my first car, this came in handy. A couple of points I learned:

1. This car is preowned, but the Jiffy Lube place overtightened the filter so it was a realy PITA to get off. It helps to have smaller forearms to get in between the shock tower and the intake manifold. My arms are all cut up.

2. I noticed oil on the ground after changing. I found the spot it was dripping from and realized it was just an overpour on my part. Not sure if others have had this problem, but if you miss the fill hole, oil will drip pretty far back and in my case dripped where the tranny is.

Good for DIYers!
