Over a month ago, we first informed you of the deviantART Lexus IS design contest
, and, after poring over more than 600 entries, the four judges (Brian Bolain, Lexus corporate manager of marketing communications; Clark Ishihara, VIP AutoSalon president; Nate Martínez, Motor Trend
associate online editor; and Alex Shen, Calty Design Research, Inc. studio chief designer) have selected 22 semi-finalists plus 1st, 2nd and 3rd-place winners. In the words of Lexus USA's official press release
, "The top 25 entries were selected based on being true to the essence of the 2014 IS design, being consistent with the image of the Lexus brand, originality and potential as an actual executable design."
The 1st-place winner, whose very
wide-bodied design appears both at the top of our story and below is Rob Evans
from Seattle, Washington. In the words of the Lexus USA Facebook page
, "This entry has an aggressive design with a bold stance showing IS attitude that stands out. It is almost animated but with just enough realism. It screams SEMA and is an instant eye catcher that will fit right in." We'll certainly know soon enough, for Rob's creation will be brought to life by VIP Auto Salon
and publicly unveiled at the 2013 SEMA Show
in Las Vegas on November 5-8, 2013. Rob will also receive a 1-year lease on a 2014 Lexus IS, an all expenses paid trip to witness the reveal of his winning design, a 1-Year Premium Membership to deviantART.com, 8000 deviantART Points and a US$2000 USD Cash Prize.
The 2nd-place winner shown below is the creation by Lucia Lee
of Pasadena, California. This author particularly likes the way the diagonally-rising front fender vents echo the up kick of the side wraparound of the taillights, as evidenced in the side view rendering. Also notable are the reimagined headlights and LED-festooned brake duct cavities below, the diamond-shaped exhaust outlets out back and wheels that bear a more than passing resemblance to the S5:Fs by another longtime friend-of-Lexus designer: Troy Sumitomo's Five Axis.
The 3rd-place design shown below was submitted by Guanghao Huang
from Southfield, Michigan. It is most notable by its use of color accents, both in the black that rises from the spindle grille, up the hood to the roof and then down to the trunk lid; and in the red striping that accentuates the side shoulder line and wheel lips. Lucia and Guanghao will each receive a 6-Month Premium Membership to deviantART.com, 4000 deviantART Points and a US$1500 Cash Prize.
