Firefox lays beatdown on Internet Explorer at my.IS
The word landslide doesn't even begin to describe the most recent web browser usage statistics we ran here at my.IS. In only a four day gathering of stats, it was proven that users of this site have awaken to the fact that Internet Explorer is the inferior browser of choice. Firefox takes the pie, the graph pie that is, with a record 83% coming in number 1 out of the 10 most used browsers. Coming in a long trailing 2nd is the Safari browser. Where is Microsoft's internet gateway masterpiece (that's sarcasm folks) on this list you ask? Internet Exploder sits a rocky 6th place with only 1.09%.
These statistics are generated from actual site usage, so why a greater number of actual users may not be using Firefox to visit this site, it is evident that the most active ones do. It really is no suprise to us. Word of mouth has also carried this browser far in this latest round of brower wars. We suggest anyone who is still dealing with the apparent frustrations of being an Internet Explorer user to try out Firefox. Just try it! We can guarantee most will never, ever want to look back.
To find out more on Mozilla Firefox head over to getfirefox.com. It is entirely free, so what have you got to lose? Well, aside from everything on your hard drive that is at potential risk by using IE. The choice is yours!
Wow, have I missed the boat! I have been complaining about the spyware/pop-unders in Explorer ad nausem. I had heard about Firefox but didn't know IS owners are so hip to it! Hey, I already know you have good taste. I am downloading it as soon as I get home this afternoon!
A question for you techies out there: should I uninstall the Explorer web browser completely, or am I safe keeping it as a back-up, say in case I want to access a site using ActiveX, which Firefox doesn't support? I didn't know if just having the Explorer browser installed makes me vulnerable, or only if I am actually using it. Thanks in advance for any help.
[Webmaster: Firefox does support ActiveX. You can leave it installed - Some sites will work only with IE - for me, that means Quickbooks Online]

Yes FireFox is growing in popularity but how could the margin be so big?
Safari, Netscape and Opera all beat IE ...something is not right here, come on Netscape ?
Are you sure there were no errors while the stats were generated?
[Webmaster: These stats are for THIS SITE ONLY - think about the kinds of users we have here, many of them are geeks. I have stats using the same software for three general ecommerce sites that I maintain that show the "expected" results with IE at 80%, Firefox 10% - but THIS SITE however, is obviously different...]
I've been using Firefox ever since I got my iMac G5 this summer. It sure beats IE in navigation and anti-spam/viral program protection. With IE, I got hit by so many pop-ups and self installing ad programs. Firefox is clean like a whistle.
However, I still keep IE since certain websites doesn't work with Firefox.
I don't know. I like Firefox and all, but I have a hard time believing these numbers. Could it be that since you provide RSS feeds you get more Firefox hits? Firefox has the built in RSS reader, so everytime someone fires up Firefox (with a subscription to your feed) you get RSS hits on your site, even if that person doesn't actually make a visit to your site. Every time your IE users open IE though, no hit.
Just think of all the times you open and close your browser in a day.
Yeah, no?
[Webmaster: First, the stats are based on visits, not individual hits. Second, you're assuming enough people grab the RSS feed to make an impact. And third, that all those people grabbing the feed are using Firefox - there are plenty of other readers, I use Thunderbird.]
I would say the stats are probably correct since many of the most active users here are Firefox users like me visiting the parking lot all day from work.
Fair enough on the RSS response. Didn't realize we had so many firefox geeks on the site, and I'm one of them. Where are the real geeks though? Why aren't there any sessions from Lynx on there? Text mode baby.
