Consumer Reports and the Lexus IS (April 2007)

As has become our custom here at my.IS, we bring you the latest updates and information from Consumer Reports' twice-yearly (April Auto Issue and November New Car Preview) issues devoted solely to automotive consumer and reliability information.

The April 2007 starts by repeating (from their November 2006 New Car Preview) the answer to the question Which cars would owners buy again? As Consumer Reports describes this, scores were assigned to the percentage of owners who responded "definitely yes" to the following question:"Considering all factors (price, performance, reliability, comfort, enjoyment, etc.) would you get this car if you had it to do all over again? The highest ranked Upscale Sedan was the BMW 330i AWD, with an 86% favorable rating. This was followed by a tie between the Lexus IS350 and BMW 330i RWD, with an 83% favorable rating.

The Lexus IS250 also figures among the most fuel-efficient midsized & large sedans. Here are the rankings, with overall MPG figures per CR's real-world tests:

  • 1) Toyota Camry Hybrid (34 mpg)
  • 2) (tie) Honda Accord Hybrid & Nissan Altima 2.5S (25 mpg)
  • 3) (tie) BMW 325i, Chevrolet Malibu (4-cyl.), Honda Accord (4-cyl.), Lexus IS250, Toyota Camry LE (4-cyl.) & Volkswagen Passat 2.0T (24 mpg)

The April 2007 Consumer Reports Auto Issue includes the Lexus IS250/IS350 offset frontal and side crash IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) test results, both of which are Good (their best rating). Crash & rollover tests by NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) have not yet been carried out on the Lexus IS250/IS350.

A comparison of Upscale Sedans Vehicle Ratings shows the following sedans with excellent ratings:

  • 1) Infiniti G35 RWD (92 points out of 100)
  • 2) Lexus ES350 (91 points)
  • 3) Acura TL (90 points)
  • 4) Infiniti G35 AWD (87 points)
  • 5) Nissan Maxima (85 points)
  • 6) Lexus IS250 (85 points)

This is Consumer Reports' summary of the Lexus IS250's capabilities:

  • Predicted Reliability: Better than Average
  • Owner Satisfaction: Better than Average
  • Accident Avoidance: Much Better than Average
  • Crash Protection: Much Better than Average
  • Highs: Transmission, braking, quietness, fuel economy, fit & finish, turning circle, crash-test results
  • Lows: Ride, rear seat, lacks sportiness

The individual Vehicle Profile for the 2nd-generation Lexus IS says that it is one of Consumer Reports Recommended vehicles, with Better than Average Reliability and Satisfaction (the latter essentially the answer to the "would you get this car if you had it to do all over again?" question) and Predicted Depreciation that is Much Better (Much Lower) than Average. Here's how they summarizes the 2nd-generation Lexus IS:

Lexus' small rear-wheel-drive sedan has a plush, quiet interior with simple controls, but it lacks the sporty feel of some competitors. Standard stability control makes handling secure but not very sporty, partly because the steering lacks feedbackand the ride is jittery. The base 2.5-liter V6 is refined and delivers quick acceleration, and fuel economy is good. The optional 3.5-liter V6 is very strong. All-wheel-drive is optional on the IS250. The front cabin is tight and the rear seat is extremely cramped. IIHS crash-test results have been impressive.

Among their Reliable Used Cars, Consumer Reports recommends the 2001 Lexus IS300 in the $16,000-$18,000 price range, the 2002 Lexus IS300 in the $18,000-$20,000 price range, the 2003-4 Lexus IS300 in the $20,000-$24,000 price range, and the 2006 Lexus IS250/350 in the $30,000 and up price range. The curious omission of the 2005 IS300 is probably due only to its extremely low sales numbers, which also makes it the only Lexus IS model year that doesn't appear in CR's vaunted Reliability Ratings.

And speaking of those Reliability Ratings, here's what Consumer Reports tells us about every model year the Lexus IS has been sold in the U.S. (except 2005):

Engine, major (Engine rebuild, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger, and supercharger)

Much Worse than Average for 2001 and 2002

    OVERALL USED CAR VERDICT
Much Better than Average for 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004
    Better than Average for 2006

    NEW CAR PREDICTION
    Better than Average

The only "black marks" for the Lexus IS are for the Audio System of 2001 and 2002 IS300s, which is hardly a surprise for the many owners that have struggled with CD players that "swallowed" discs and refused to eject them. (Miraculously, this author was not one of them, in spite of having owned a 2002 IS300). The other interesting conclusion is that 2003s appear to be the best year of all, with only a "Better than Average" Suspension rating preventing it from achieving a perfect sweep of "Much Better than Average" in everything.

Don't forget the used car section where the 2003 IS300 has an almost perfect rating

CBD is an unknown at this point

I'm currently looking at buying an '02, 36.5k miles, MT, great shape, etc. for $17.5k.

I saw the Consumer Reports ratings on that year and also noticed the big black dot for the stereo. The ONLY reason for this is the swallowing of discs? This is for thicker than average discs, like burnt discs, etc.? Is there other stereo probs?

This wouldn't be the first in dash cd changer to do this. I know some Hondas that had this problem as well.
