2a.) Does the Tomei turbo upgrade look OEM? I'm torn between the Tomei or just sending the stock turbo somewhere for a 60-1 upgrade when the time comes. I want a clean, factory-looking turbo setup.. kinda sleeper-esque.
1. This information I don't have access to. I could ask and probably find out some specs for you. Yes it looks oem just its black and pretty.

2. My stock turbo was horrible wouldn't hold boost and was leaking. I was also tuned by a POS tuner that later found out why it felt like crap. The spool comes in slightly later but when it kicks in it is hard pull at power it makes.

3. As far as stock look unless I tell someone they don't have a clue its not the stock one.

Sounds like a winner. I bet it's nice to have a reliable steel wheel instead of the ceramic...

I would start enjoying it more if it would stop breaking camshafts is really starting to tick me off. I am dropping it off this week at TES performance to check the head for issues causing it. I am clueless what to look for at this point valve lash is correct.

I also got the drag radials powered to match the other wheels finally.

The car is under taking some new measures. I purchased a used 1jzgte vvti head off ebay and having it rebuilt to see if this cam issue is something with this head. I am also pulling the motor and prepping for more boost

Well a lot has changed and most of the updates have been done on my blog. The car is running again but I am still hearing the tapping noise from the VVTI gear area where it keeps breaking. At this point it has a completely rebuilt head.

At this point i am about to rip everything Tomei off and sell. The cam shaft has broken again just last night. However I have managed to find someone else with the same issue at this point.

Definitely way too soon to see another cam failure like that.

'If' you try another one, I would sand smooth any edges and rough casting around that hole... or at least recommend that to them. Putting it under the microscope one could tell for sure, but any rough spots around a weak spot like that hole typically create a great place for cracks to start on 'brittle' materials.

I had one car where the exhaust cam snapped on me. The casting on it was rougher than others I had seen and failed where there was a hole drilled through the cam similar to yours. Where the failure started was for sure one of the imperfections in my case.

Well I called Tomei and told them that i was tired of the cam breaking and switching back to stock or different brand. Well after this they said they would get me a HKS intake cam. Well that came in and what a hell of difference in quality from there's. However is it something I am doing installing that is causing them to break? I am following the 2jz service manual when installing cause the 1jz manual is none existent. I always cleaned the other ones with break cleaner really good then coated it with oil. But i am wondering right there where the VVTI solenoid sits if i am putting the silicone in wrong places cause it is different than the 2jz pictures and if the torque specs are different and I am to tight right there.

Thanks,
Dereck

This is the 3rd person I have heard of breaking the cams.

Any updates with the HKS cams?

The HKS cam is in just finished this couple days ago. I guess time will tell again if we run into issues. The car seems to make the exact same tapping noise right where the vvti gear is.

1jzgte build

Hi LexusSpeed01

i built my lexus is200 with a 1jzgte vvti and i'm running a standard turbo and cams and i asked my tuner and he told me that he disabled the vvti cause, he told me that it will snap the cams if they enable it only the original ecu can run it, so we disconnected the solenoid and my car runs perfectly so maybe that might help you. My car is running a spitronics standalone and its a South African made ecu, Aem is a far better ecu but i would say to get the vvti disabled and see if that helps the hks cams are perfect for it.
