The dyno results are in and there good numbers I am happy with them but not where I was shooting for. There is some little issues here and there.

The car put down 356rwhp and 296rwtq with 91 pump gas at 17-18 psi. This is the lowest the wastegate would stay closed to lol.
On C16 the car made 418rwhp and 380rwtq. at 21-22 psi. We were pushing for 25-26 psi but couldn't get above 22 psi.

I will post the dyno video and dyno sheet shortly. The car was tuned by Clint Baird at Dynosaur Performance in Texas.

Hey Guys,

Well the car was on the dyno Thursday and all was going well till the next day. I unloaded it from the trailer and went to have some fun and coming back from Walmart turned corner and car just flat out died a like 25mph not being hard on it or anything just rolled and died. Well took a closer look and found that the VVTi pull was shifted and looked like timing belt had moved farther back on the gear. I pushed it and to find the VVTI pulley is completely loose. So i pulled on it and the whole gear comes off with part of the Tomei Camshaft attached!!!

What could have caused this to failure? Premature failure? I was told that by torquing to high but we torqued to FSM specs.

Anyone have some thoughts on this? Fortunately looks like the valves landed with all them closed but maybe the 6th cylinder and barely pushing on them...

I am waiting on a response from Tomei on this and what they are gonna do as a replacement.

I think you have more than just cams to worry about now. You need to check for any bent valves.

Yes Sir,

We are getting the cams replaced but they wont be here for a couple of weeks. Here is the email received by Tomei. They have excellent customer support and service!

Hello Dereck,

Upon checking with our folks in Japan, the process of inserting the steel ball that goes into the oil passage way may have caused the intake camshaft to fail.

Since then, they have improved on the design, and shouldn’t be an issue in the future.

We apologize for the troubles, and they are working on the replacement intake camshaft to be shipped from Japan on the 15th of this month, and we should see it here shortly.

From there, we will ship it as soon as we receive this item.

Once again, thank you very much for your patience and understanding in regards.

Best Regards,
Taka

The car is back up and running now and there is no signs of problem's I have spoken to multiple sources and the 1jzgte vvti is not interference. I have found a youtube video of a guy showing it as well. So the knocking sound that I was hearing that I thought was the head was sure coming the from the cam for a while till it broke. The car is quiet as can be now.

Here is the Dyno Sheet on 22 psi on the Tomei Turbo and Cam's running C16

Hi

I have been reading this thread thoroughly, I have bought myself a 1JZ GTE vvti with an R154 box to fit into my IS200. Luckily the engine is already wired up with a EMU Masters ECU so I wont have to mess around to much with that. I am currently waiting till the summer is over before taking the car off of the road to do the swap and in the mean time I am looking for parts to buy.

I am looking at buying the complete tomei set, the 8280 turbo kit, extreme outlet pipe, extreme manifold and poncams... now would you still recommend them after the trouble you had with the intake camshaft?

Also I am unsure what to do with the injectors, did you run standard injectors on the setup before changing?

Thanks

Tommy

I would still recommend there products. The turbo is doing fantastic. The only issue I had was with the cam's so far knock on some wood. There customer service is excellent is why I would still recommend them.

As far as the manifold goes i have been trying to get my hands on one for a while since the release now but only available in Japan which sucks currently.

However last night at the drag strip I am hearing some noise from the head on the intake side and going to check into later today and if it is something with the cam or the head was in fact damaged will be my debate on Tomei.

As far as I know the head shouldnt have been damaged, as said before it is free floating.. unless the poncams have more travel than standard??

I am having to import everything from Japan, its pretty hard getting hold of much here in the UK, Seems to be few and far between and it took me 3 months to find an R154. Besides buying it all in 1 place brand new gives me a bit more piece of mind.

I dont suppose you have any pictures of your fuel return or a link? I've looked about but cant see anything definitive

Cheers

Tommy

Oh, and sorry for all the questions but does the vvti still work with the poncams? and did you need to reshim them?

Thanks

I did not reshim them was not needed and yes the VVTi works but tuner did not tune much of the VVTi.

If you search for my post I have some stuff on the return line but don't follow mine to much because my gas gauge still sucks and doesn't read right and still can't fix it and very irritating.

Couple of quick questions...

1) How much is the manifold supposed to improve air flow? I've heard the stock 1j manifold is pretty restrictive?

2) How does the Tomei turbo upgrade feel vs stock? Obviously better, but how is it for the street? How's spool? etc.

2a.) Looking at pictures, seems the Tomei turbo upgrade looks almost OEM, aside from it being 15 years younger than the engine it's attached to lol. Agreed? I want a clean, factory-looking turbo setup.. kinda sleeper-esque. This looks like it'd fit the bill.
