Open the hood. The air box is right behind the grille on the passenger side of the engine compartment.
To open it, free the cable from the side of the box and pop the four (4) latches.
Lift lid carefully, remove dirty filter and drop the new one in. Place lid back on, insuring a tight fit. Re-latch and put that cable back in its clip.
Close the hood, go home and have a beer. Then enjoy better gas mileage (not necessarily in that order...)
cdeslandes is correct. but to see the air intake box, you must remove the engine covers....part of front and all of passenger side covers. they're held down by re-usable plastic rivets. after that follow cdeslandes' instructions. gl...

Correct. And to remove those rivets, press down on the little button in the middle of each rivet.
This advice carries over to the 2008 IS 350 right? Also, how often should this be changed? (I'm sure the info's in the manual, I just thought I'd ask too though)

When it is dirty, check on it every once in a while, maybe at oil changes

I find this car to be very sensitive to air filter condition. You will lose power and gas mileage as soon as it gets even a little dirty.
I would recommend checking it at every oil change (5,000 miles.)

I replace mine every 12,000 to 15,000 miles.
2nd this. I've never driven a car in my life that noticeably feels different with a modestly dirty filter like the IS350. I change mine around 10K or so.

It just tells you how optimized the intake is. The slightest decrease in airflow can be felt.
That's also why substitute intakes fail to deliver significant Hp figure - the stock intake is very well optimized!

I was having a hard time dealing with the air box. I can't find my tools. I wasn't able to finish it last week.
Sorry for bringing up an old post. I changed my engine filter today for the first time and was wondering what the other filter is that sits above the engine filter? Does it need to be changed?
^^ I'm glad you brought it back to life. I didn't see the follow up posts from cdeslandes and Dr B. My 2008 IS 350 is now 16kish miles and looking at their posts, I think I really should change this air filter. I've owned it since January when I got it new, but am not sure how long it was sitting on the lot before I bought.
I need to figure out where to get an air filter from, also maybe I should look into the blitz air filter. I had read good things about it, and my.is member bartkat had also given me advice with using the Joe-Z intake.
Anyone else on the same boat?

The Blitz is a good air filter. Very slight improvement in gas mileage over the Toyota one. No noticeable difference in power.
As for the question relative to that second filter that sits on top of the main one, it's a carbon filter designed to avoid hydrocarbons from leaking out through the intake when the car is at rest.
Several members on this board have proven that removing it does nothing to improve performance. So just leave it be.

Here's what my filter looked like after 27K miles:
I would recommend at least checking it out (took me about 10minutes for the first time, and most of time was just taking off the two top covers).
I ordered the Joe-Z intake today. However, I'm sticking with the $20 oem filter vs $60+ Blitz...

Does that carbon filter last the lifetime of the vehicle or does it need to be changed perodically? It looked kinda dirty also but it's probably just the carbon...

Lexus standard maintenance change interval for the engine air filter (and cabin filter) is every 15,000 miles.

AFAIK there's no recommended or required change interval for the carbon filter.
