Looks like it's splitting and should be replaced, timing belt is one of those things I take seriously. I'd take it back to the place you got it done and talk to them about it. I would think something has caused its life to be shortened whether it's defective or not is up for debate.

I think thats how its suppose to be because I just looked at my timing belt which is still brand new and wrapped in plastic and it has the same lines as yours.

I think its normal and intended by Toyota as the timing belt i have is still brand new and never opened.

i think thats what your supposed to use as a reference to install correctly. from one dot to the other dot is how you alighn it up on the cams, the cams have markers for timing. and you line up the dots on the cams to the dots on the belt. that way you dont screw it up.

re:OEM has grooves for sure

As I spoke in another thread about it,I talked to 3 dealers and the parts guys of two places saw the intermittent groove on all of their stock belts.they/i was shocked.that's how they are stiched and they are fine.I have 50k on an 02 and after talking w/krispl and the dealers,do not worry at all as long as the groove DOES NOT RUN WHOLE LENGTH of belt, only less than half.if overall condition is ok,then you are good till at least 90k mabe up to in hundreds.

Just curious...why did you go back in and remove the stuff to look at the belt again after that amount of time??
