If i remember they used handcut slicks and did something with the suspension. They also told everyone they did it. The corvette did an unofficial run with the same type tires and suspension and beat it. They made no big deal about it because it wasnt a legitimate run. Nissan is claiming theirs is legitimate while noone in the auto world has accepted that time except for the GT-R fanatics.

The question everyone should be asking is whether the GT-R that ran the 7:28 was running RE070R's or some insane slicks like PSC's or Hoosiers.

The factory GT-R does NOT come with R compound tires (ie: Pilot sport cups).

They come with RE070 Potenza's.

If the GT-R that ran 7:28 actually had RE070's... then Porsche is crying like a lil b1tch... and probably purposely ran the GT-R slower.

If the GT-R was using slicks, then correct... it's comparing apples and oranges. Street tires don't even come close to slicks.

the only way for it to ever be solved is for a neutral party to buy one off the showroom floor take it to the track and let nissan send their own driver. That way is a known bone stock GT-R and a driver that is going to give it hell. Until that happens nothing will ever be settled

I believe the ZR1's time was with a full stock setup. Stock tires.

Not saying they're "bad" cars but to say they're one of the best in reliability is simply not true. I'm also not saying I wouldn't drive one in a heartbeat.

Ranked right up with Infiniti and Lexus with initial quality, where do they stand 5 years later? and yes it is true they are very reliable, they always have been, especially for the power they've produced and how people drive them.

You must be looking at one or two online statements instead of actual real life experience, that much is obvious if you claim they have any bad reputation for reliability. Anybody that knows a damn about cars know that Porsche have always made reliable cars.

Sure there were a couple shitty cars back in the 70's, the 914 and others that had misc. problems, but what mfg hasn't had a shitty run or model yanked from production?

Year after year they show up along the top 5 car mfg's for quality, for 20+ years they've averaged among the top 5 in many studies.
Here, I did a random search on Edmunds for a 2000 911 from actual customers, look at their opinions and factual ratings:
2000 Porsche 911 Consumer Review

I grew up around a Porsche's, Ferrari's, Vette's, and many exotics along with american stuff, Porsches were always counted on to win a race maybe not due to being the fastest, but the most consistent. Their racing heritage is proven, even this year they took the World Challege Speed GT class in mfg's cup. Le Mans they've provenmany times over. On the road, they're the same.

I'm not trying to sway you into loving Porsches, I'm not even a huge fan boy, I just know that they're very reliable cars and have been for decades.

Only real things that sucks, is when they DO break down, they cost an arm and a leg to repair, as with any exotic or German car might, for this people bitch and moan that their 100k+ car isn't perfect.

My uncle was a cheif mechanic at Aker's Porsche in Seattle for 35+ years, he hates the sight of them by now since he retired, but he'll always recommend a Porsche for the money you'd spend.

That should not matter. they ran the car with what Nissan in their engineering wisdom decided to equip the GTR with, against thier own cars on their own stock tires...sounds like a apples to apples comparism to me

Here is the thing that I still don't get. I've seen numerous magazine comparisons for the GTR, 911 Turbo, and Z06 and in every single one the GTR spanks them around the track.

What does that mean?

right, but what he and i are saying is that it will be a better comparison overall if both cars used the same tires to cancel out the whole tire issue entirely.

I understand that "The Ring" is a long track, but 25 seconds of a difference on tires alone is a bit much. Just to put it in more perspective, that 25 seconds difference puts the GTR at 7:54. In comparison, the e92M3 supposedly did 8:05 in "The Ring". I find it hard to believe that the GTR is only 11 seconds faster than the M3 with "85hp" more(probably 100hp more), AWD, and DCT transmission. The reason i mentioned the DCT is that because the M3 that was used in The Ring was with conventional 6speed tranny. And in another comparison, the new CTS-V @ 7:55 is almost just as quick even though it's heavier and only RWD. JHMO

Hmm... just as another "test"... the Porsche 911 GT3 lapped the Top Gear track in 1.27.2 minutes. The Nissan GT-R did the same lap in 1.19.7 min.

So if it was just Nissan's personal test that claimed the GT-R was faster than the Porsche 911... then that's one thing... but if many people are getting the GT-R to be faster than the Porsche... I think Nissan should be taken seriously.
