Porsche accuses Nissan GT-R of cheating the 'Ring:

The mighty Godzilla was toppled by the Teutonic German duo, with the GT-R posting times a good 25-seconds slower than Nissan's claim.
How can Porsche explain the discrepancy? "This wonder car with 7:29 could not have been a regular series production car. For us, it's not clear how this time is possible. What we can imagine with this Nissan is they used other tires," says August Achleitner, the man in charge of the 911 program. There is footage of the GT-R lapping the 'Ring at high speed, but it's taken from inside the car where the tires cannot be seen.
Considering the fact that Nissan saw fit to issue a press release commemorating the car's fast-lap, we doubt this is something that will be taken lightly. There's a big can 'o worms here, and Porsche's in the corner holding the opener.
I think the key here is that they are allowed to use whatever tires they want as long as they come on the car you can buy off the lot. As long as they come stock it's fair.

doesnt surprise me that they used special RACE tires on a RACE course and not the stock supplied tires...
so what? STFU porsche and stop crying...
Uh....when it comes to track times, tires are EVERYTHING. Hell yeah it matters.
Let me put it in context of something you might understand. Give the GT-R slicks for a 1/4 mile run and compare those numbers to a production tired Porsche. Fair? i think not.

I'm almost sure it was a well known fact that they use a different set of tires, don't know exactly what it was, but it wasn't like it was a secret. It was documented and the press knew about it.
Someone should organize a race between them with identical tires and see what happens. That would make for a good Top Gear episode.
great idea! they should do it. but you do realize engineers design and choose tires for optimum performance on their cars, so choosing generic performance tires not used by either would be the most fair

I think it should just be the tires that come on the car. I mean think about it; as long as it's equipped on a stock car that's fair game.

true, but remember the GT-R is trying to balance as an everyday car (i.e. noise, comfort) and the Porsche is not designed to be a daily driver. so they took that into consideration in choosing the tires. so, pick tires neither use

That makes no difference. A test like that only cares about one thing. Which is faster? And for that test stock equipment is stock equipment and is allowed in the test. If you pay 75k for a GTR and it comes with nice ass tires that's fine; because you paid for them.
Look at that argument from a different angle. Is it logical to say that a test between a 335 sedan and an IS300 isn't appropriate because the 335 has more power and therefore the two cars should be tested with engines that neither of them come stock with to make it fair? Of course not; the stock tires that a car comes with is part of it's competitive edge.
