An MR2 for a 1st car? And a practical DD? NO WAY. If you get him in an mid-engined car as his first, he wont be on the streets too long IMO. I'd say no to an STi too, 300hp is just too much for a beginning driver. I know I wanted a rocket when I was 16, but the car I had was the best 1st car I could have asked for. A 1993 Celica ST Automatic (R.I.P.), with a whopping 103hp. I learned alot from that car. I got alot of my immature "dumbass" driving out of my system and realized how serious driving is. Then a school bus wrecked it

Do you honestly think 200-300hp is a good decision for an inexperienced driver?

Do you know what I drove when I was 16? An '89 Toyota farm use truck we bought off of our farmer. I beat the everliving piss out of that thing and did some really stupid stuff, I can't imagine what I would have done with 300hp and AWD.

If he has to have a brand new car my vote is for the Hyundai as well. If you don't like him very much and want him to die, get the WRX / STi

Edit: there are a lot of safe, reliable cars that were built before 2001 btw...

dude i'm with you. trust me i am. but its simply not my choice. i am however pushing very hard for the genesis. or else the IS300. i would hate to see him get wrx, or the MR2. I am aware that there are safe cars made prior to 2001. he apparently is not, and he can't be convinced. again, these aren't my rules, they are his. there is a reason i'm researching not him or ryan. he knows that i love and study cars. thats why i was asked.

another thing to consider is that he is going to get ryan a car that ryan likes. if ryan doesn't like it, ryan wont get it. its just that easy.

i'm feeling alot of pressure. if something happens and ryan gets hurt, i may be looked at as at fault. thats not a situation i want. so this decision is hard. thats why i talked him out of the bmw. its too damn fast. the mr2 is a fairly safe car in the event of an accident, though i wish it wasn't a convertable. wrx is pretty safe as well. is300 is really safe, and so is the jetta.

The IS300 is a good choice too, it's not really fast enough to get him in trouble even if he ends up modding it. It's relatively safe like you said. Although, I was very unimpressed with the fact that my IS300's airbag did not deploy in an accident where everyone who saw it said that it should. I was very lucky.

yeah the 1.8t is notoriously unreliable, but lately i've been hearing that it was mostly maintainence issues.

the mr2 is subjective, i'd prefer the previous generation, but its not about what i'd get.

I'd say something in FWD would be safer for a 16 year old. They are just going to blow it up anyways. My first car barely lasted four months and I'm glad I really didnt spend any money on it, so to speak.

I too agree with most of the options on here and think even the IS is a little fast for a 16 yr. old. Keeping him in a FWD will limit hp a bit and also keep the car a hair more controllable in the stupid situations he is likely to seek out at his age.

GL. Not a situation I'd want in the middle of. Some kid that wont listen and a parent that is trying to take the kid out. Have fun. lol

Please re-read about the MR2 from an MR2 owner.
