Four years of free maintenance, 0.9% rate, and a warranty don't compensate for 50% depreciation within the first year on most models.

BMW's are great cars and they are bang for the buck pre-owned but buying one new unless you have money to burn or are able to write it off isn't the wisest financial decision. Then again I'm not your accountant and if you can fathom that type of financial loss you are probably better off then I am and don't need my advice.

don't know where you get the 50% number, no BMWs I can think of are below 50% value even after 3 years.

The BMW 3 series has the best residuals in it's class. I can assure you no BMW will lose 50% after 4 years.

Take into consideration I am being generous with my MSRP because I am using base MSRP with no options.

BMW's hold their value if you use something like Kelly Blue Book or NADA retail. But as someone who works in the industry of specializing in pre-owned BMW's and Jaguars I can tell you there are very few people who actually pay anywhere KBB or NADA retail on these. On average there is 8-10% margin from the MMR prices I posted and if you watch eBay auctions you will see that they are very close to the auction selling prices (within 10%). So I guess it's all a matter of perspective but as someone who sells 7-10 pre-owned BMW's a month I would be happy to find people who are willing to pay book retail on these cars, because through autotrader, eBay, local paper, and internatinal sales I haven't been able to find them.

Below I show that the 7 series, 5 series, 3 series, 6 series, and M series all lose close to 50% of their value within 2 years and even up to 60-70% in 3 years.

Are we talking about dealer auctions, or actual prices people pay? Comparing MSRP to dealer auction 3 years later is ridiculous. Cars that lose a lot of value, like my E46 ZHP, had huge discounts when sold new. My 2004 330i was going for $7k off MSRP when new.

Owned? Show me which ones of those cars lost 50% in the first year, cause I don't see one.

First you claimed "most BMWs lose 50% of their value in one year" - not 2 or 3 years.

And you're quoting prices in the middle of one of the worst months in US economic history, at a time when car sales are down 30-70% for just about every car maker.

Unlike houses there is no public record of what people pay for their cars, so there are only two ways to find out the actual sales price of a vehice. MMR (Manheim Market Retail) and eBay are the only two consistent source of information. Over the last 2 years I have done over a thousand hours of studying and watching eBay vehicle sales, I keep a close eye on over a hundred models of cars many of which include BMW. eBay which is available to the public on average is only 7% higher in actual selling price than dealer auctions. "Internet" dealers have very little overhead and are able pass the savings along to the public. Now you walk into a BMW dealer, of course the car is going to cost more; you are paying for their fancy showroom, the salary of the 5 sales guys standing around the water cooler, and countless other luxuries that are irrelevant to vehicle sales process.

If you have another type of ACTUAL concrete data showing vehicle sales outside of dealer auction records and eBay, we can throw that into the mix, otherwise eBay and MMR is all we have.

All of my MSRP prices were BASE with absolutely no options, that easily offsets the discounts available.

Now, here's the point I'm making. Instead of nitpicking on each others posts, let me clarify what I am trying to say and you tell me if you disagree with me. My original post was pointing out that NEW BMW's have poor resale value and can drastically drop within a year (on some models maybe it is 20% on others maybe 50%, regardless it's a big chunk of $). But, unless one can financially afford to take a 5 figure hit or are able to write off their car via corporate lease, do you feel that it is a good idea to purchase a brand new BMW? The issue with economy today is that people who make $30,000/year are running off and buying brand new BMW's that lose $10,000+ within a year or two. I'm not saying these people don't deserve to drive BMW's but they can go and purchase a pre-owned model a couple of years old at HALF the cost of the new one. Instead they use poor incentives like 0.9% financing and a warranty which VERY RARELY save them anywhere near $10,000+ on their cars.

I think it's hard to disagree that it's extremely hard to justify buying new as opposed to pre owned unless you make 6 figures a year which many buying these cars don't.

Yeah, ok, I totally agree with that. New BMWs are a ripoff, even with 0% financing, it's really hard to justify buying a new one. In fact the guy who sold me my 18 month old 330i said "next time I'm gonna do what you did, let someone else eat the depreciation." He went out and bought a used E46 M3.

And some of those auction prices on 7 series are really shocking.

BMW has yet again changed it's sales plans:

Quote:
As you all know by now BMW made the decision a few months ago to change its strategy. They opted to use the “pull” mentality in much the way MINI operates and has been successful, a car is sought by a purchaser rather than pushed by the dealer. This is to keep supply and demand in check and not allow for a huge inventory or surplus of cars.

Indications from inside Woodcliff Lakes is that there is another change coming. All indications are that the pull plan is going out the window because the economic downturn has gone global and is not just a US issue. BMW had cut US allocations to send them elsewhere, the problem is that elsewhere is getting hit harder with this downturn than the US. The economy in Russia has lost about half of its value in the past few months, a key emerging market for BMW that is no longer going to have the anticipated demand. That is not to mention the issues in Europe and the remainder of Asia.

As we reported yesterday, BMW will be cutting overall production at the Leipzig plant. This was not part of the original plan of just moving allocations, by eliminating cars this signifies something far worse. The other major issue is that customers are not making large scale purchases, like cars, in fear of our economy worsening. This is not helped by the “pull” mentality and the fact leases are not being subsidized as much as in the past. While the industry as a whole is suffering BMW is seeing former customers looking elsewhere for a lower payment as even with the Owner Loyalty rates BMW is not even in the same ballpark payment wise as other marquees.

In a nutshell BMW has indicated that they will announce “a new aggressive sales and marketing plan by tomorrow”. Making Friday announcements is a technique BMW has been using to spur commenting on blogs and forums over the weekend to get some easy free marketing; mainstream media will cover it as well but over the weekend word of mouth picks up a bit.

We suspect that leases may become a bit more reasonable but more so that financing will become even better for longer periods of time. This would make buying the car via financing have similar payments as a lease. There may be new “pull ahead” programs to get existing lease customers into newer cars sooner with special money factors. While these ideas are pure speculation, something is coming tomorrow and it should move cars.

From our conversations with salespeople in the industry this is welcomed news, as they are getting minimal traffic these days and financially hurting badly.

We should have more details by tomorrow afternoon so stay tuned.

BMW is focked, no matter what they do. I've lost the value of a new 335i in my 401k this year - 0% financing isn't gonna make me say "Oh cool, I think I'll buy a new BMW!"

On a related note:

Quote:
After a recent discussion of BMW’s higher 2009 prices with a friend, I wanted to see for myself how expensive the new Bimmers have become.

If you hate numbers, don’t read this.

I own a 2006 330xi. New, “Claus,” as I affectionately call him, stickered for $46,990. He started at $38,500, plus $695 destination. Very few option boxes were left unchecked … Sport Package ($900), Premium Package ($2200), Cold Weather Package ($850), navigation ($2000), satellite radio ($595), iPod and USB adapter ($400), Comfort Access ($500), Park Distance Control ($350), all there. The only significant options not found on Claus’ window sticker were the automatic transmission (if you can drive a 6-speed, buy a 6-speed), 18-inch wheels (I don’t understand an all-wheel-drive car with summer performance tires), and metallic paint (I have a thing for white cars.)

For comparison, on BMWUSA.com, I built a 2009 335i xDrive Sedan, a white one, and selected the same options.

$52,645. I had a mild coronary.

The thought of spending more than $50k on a car, on anything really, scares me a little. It’s kind of a psychological barrier for me. And a 12% price increase over what my car cost in 2006 initially made me think BMW has become a trifle greedy. Then I started really looking at the numbers.

First, the 330xi became the 335xi in 2007 with the addition of the turbocharged, 300-hp engine. That change sparked a $2300 bottom-line bump, taking the base price of the 335xi to $40800. Worth it? Probably.

Destination charges have also increased since 2006, going from $695 on my car, to $825 today. The fuel used to transport BMW’s to dealerships undoubtedly justifies the $130 increase that represents.

Is this guy serious? Has this guy ever heard of massive transportation?

That entire post just defies logic left and right. Has the guy got a degree in business? Innovation demands new equipment at the same price as time progresses.
