hey. i've been asked about this TONS of times, so here's all the info.
LIST OF PARTS:
Alpine NVE-N872A nav system ($1200 on ebay)
Alpine TME-M770 6.5inch touch screen ($500 on ebay)
Alpine TUE-T151 tv tuner ($150 on ebay)
PS2 Slim ($100 on ebay)
VAIS Tech iPod auxiliary input ($300, at
Toyota/Lexus Audio,Video and Information Solutions (Lexus Auxiliary input,Lexus iPod integration,Lexus XM integration))
Lexus OEM Nav Housing ($700 at dealership, or can check out
Lexus Parts at Lexus Parts Online - LexusPartsOnline.com, but that will be around the same)
(see the list of Lexus parts below. Don't pay attention the the price. That price list is about 5 years old, all dealer prices have gone up since.)
I originally bought a Kenwood 7-inch screen with the Kenwood Nav (KNA-G510) but there was no way to fit the screen inside the lexus housing.
So I went with Alpine, the screen fit LIKE A GLOVE in the housing. It fit PERFECTLY between these two little indentations that the housing has on the inside. One millimeter wider or narrower and it wouldn't have fit as well. So the guy at the shop built a pretty simple bracket to keep the screen permanently in place.
CONNECTION SETUP:
Nav box connected to the screen's nav input
PS2 and tv tuner into the screen's two video inputs
the Vais aux-in unit has two inputs. One specifically for the iPod, and then a general one. so the screen's sound OUTPUT goes to the vais unit (the vais unit connects directly into the stock sound system without having to remove anything. it makes the car think you're playing a cd). so i can choose to listen to radio, tape, cds, ipod, or screen (the sound i get is whatever is showing on my screen, whether it be navigation, DVD, or tv). the only shitty part is i cant listen to any of those things at the same time. if i have it on ipod, its ipod. so if im using nav, i usually just play music and never actually hear the nav, i just see it. if i chose to listen to the nav, i wouldnt be able to listen to any music simultaneously.
hope this helps.
**and this is the thread where i originally got the idea, by one of the first guys to do this. you can download the complete installation instructions there, although he used different parts.**
** INSTRUCTIONS for building 02 nav housing **
and one more thread for reference.
Navigation Install
both of these guys used different actual parts, but that's just personal preference. my setup was done a few years after theirs', with some newer alpine parts. and the alpine parts fit PERFECTLY. but you can try and find something else if you so please. that's totally up to you.
BUT THOSE TWO THREADS GAVE ME ALL OF THE INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS I NEEDED TO DO THIS PROJECT.
