I had a few questions. I just bought a used OEM navigation unit that comes complete with the motorize flip screen and unit but I'm not sure how to hook it up. Does anyone know of a write up of how to install or wut i need to splice. And 2nd question is for the screen itself, is it only GPS only, or does my music display on the screen as well?
well, for starters, you're probably gunna get bashed for not even trying to use the search function 1st. so it may feel like an unwarm welcome to the forum, but in reality its just that EVERY topic about the IS has been covered WAY more than just a few times and people naturally hate seeing the same threads over and over again, and answering the saaaaaaame things over and over again..
almost as annoying as it is to read the phrase "over and over again" over and over again, and repeating that over and over again about 10 times a day, every day over again..
i also hope you realize that the stock navi unit is not touch screen, and it wont work without the button controls on the center console (the cars that come with stock navi have those controls just behind the shifter where the cupholder is).
i am one of a few guys to have built a custom aftermarket navi unit into the stock motorized housing, so i don't know for sure, but i have a pretty educated guess that there's no way for you to realistically make that work, nor in an economically-intellingent way (meaning, what it'll cost you to make that work will just be more worth it to get an aftermarket navi system that already comes WITH dvd, ipod interface, backup camera, etc., etc.).
speaking of which. if somehow you CAN make this work, it'll only be navi.
mine "looks" stock, but its an alpine system with navi, tv tuner, ps2 slim (which also doubles as a dvd player), and an ipod connection that allows me to run my ipod directly through my sound system and control it through the buttons on my headunit (no fm tuners or any of that crap).
check out the link on my sig to see how it was all done. try to refrain from asking questions before reading through it cuz i probably wont wanna help you out if you ask something i've already covered in my thread (since i get tons of questions about this setup all the time to the point where i basically wrote it all out in lehman's terms so i wouldnt have to keep answering the same simple things).
and one last thing, i dont know how much you got your whole setup for, but for you to have gotten all the parts for the housing INCLUDING the motor to make it open and close automatically, NOT including the stock screen, you'd spend about 700 to 750 bucks at the dealership (assuming they give you some kind of deal for ordering so many parts, cuz it could actually come out to even more than that). after that you'd get all your aftermarket navi things to put inside that housing. so if you got it at a good enough price, i would highly recommend just throwing away the stock screen and doing something creative and useful with your motorized housing. in the end, its awesome to have something that looks stock, yet does a ton more things than the stock system would.
even though you probably wont be able to find a way to make that stock system work anyways..
if you do though, i for sure would love to know how
I actually have done searches and believe me, I found a lot of information on here, a lot through ur posts too since it comes up on all the google searches and your video on youtube as well. I know where you guys get your parts from for the motorized set up and its about $700-$800 for all the mounts and motors. But I never found anything that shows exactly wut needs to be spliced or juss plug and play becuase everyone goes aftermarket. And yes, I know there are buttons on the back, eBay Motors: 2002 02 LEXUS IS300 OEM FACTORY NAVIAGTION SYSTEM GPS (item 170278488960 end time Nov-18-08 12:39:36 PST)
I have everything I need to put it in, and I think this was a pretty good deal.
I'm trying to avoid aftermarket as much as I can. I juss bought my IS a month ago, before that, I had a '00 Si Civic and was stolen, had a Eclipse AVN7000 and all the good stuff and evrything got jacked. So im tryin to refrain from anything aftermarket...at least until i graduate from college.
glad you did all that research. mention that next time so people know you're not another idiot asking dumb questions about something that that idiot probably wont be able to figure out how to do anyways.. ;-)
just checked out that link. yea, seems like its all included there, but questions off the top of my head would be:
--where is the antenna that'll let the satellites know where your car is, and how will you install it?
--how will you wire those center console buttons to be able to control the screen?
--how will you wire the screen so that it 1) works, 2) knows if it's day or night so that it's in the right mode
--where does that harddrive go anyways?
--where are all the wires that'll connect everything to everything (screen to hard drive to buttons to the car itself, etc.)?
Yea, the wires were one that did not come with it because the owner couldn't part out his harness. So I'm guessing if I buy the wiring harness from the dealer, would it be simple plug and play? And I think the hard drive goes in the trunk.
So ive been tryin to find a way to get this installed. Turns out that I need a new harness, and I've been looking around and looks like the only two possibilities Ive found is getting the stock harness for an arm and a leg from a dealer (no autoyard has it, or is willing to spend X amount of hrs to rip it out).
The other option I found was someguy on ebay, egusman, apparently he builds custom harnesses for all kinds of cars for people who want to install oem navigation back into a car that didnt come with it. He said it would be $550 to build me the three harnesses I need along with the antenna.
Wut do u all think? Is there any other alternative someone can think of so that I can make wiring to work...
